Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question? We've got answers.
Here are some of the things people often ask us before heading out. If you still have questions, just get in touch — we’re always happy to help.
Where is Jackson Bay?
Jackson Bay is located on the remote and stunning West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand — about 50 km south of Haast. It’s the gateway to some of the most rugged coastline and pristine fishing grounds in the country.
What types of trips do you offer?
We offer a range of trips, including:
- Fishing charters (half-day and full-day)
- Scenic and wildlife cruises
- Custom trips tailored to your needs
- Hunting drop-offs and pick-ups
- Stag parties, hen dos, and group celebrations
- Let us know what you have in mind — we’re happy to help you plan a memorable experience!
What can we catch?
Depending on the time of year, you can expect to catch a variety of species including but not limited to blue cod, groper (hapuku), bluenose, tarakihi, kingfish, Southern Bluefin tuna, albacore tuna, snapper, and crayfish (lobster). Seasonal conditions and fishing regulations apply to ensure sustainable and responsible fishing.
Do I need a fishing license?
No license is required for saltwater fishing in New Zealand. We’ll provide guidance on bag limits, legal sizes, and conservation rules.
Do you supply fishing and diving gear?
We supply all fishing gear including rods, reels, tackle, and bait.
You’re also welcome to bring your own fishing gear — just make sure it’s up to the task, as we commonly fish in waters between 50–400 m deep, depending on the species we’re targeting.
For scuba diving, dive gear is not supplied, but we have some weights available (but suggest you bring your own), and have a limited number of tanks available.
Tank refills are only available ashore and must be arranged before departure.
Please contact us in advance if you plan to dive so we can discuss your requirements.
Do you clean and fillet the fish?
Yes. At the end of the trip, our crew will clean, fillet, and bag your catch to take home.
What should I bring?
We recommend you bring:
- Warm clothing (layers are best)
- Waterproof jacket
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Hat and sturdy footwear
- Your camera for the amazing scenery and wildlife
- Snacks and drinks (we can also arrange catering if requested)
- If diving, please bring your full dive kit
- If bringing your own fishing gear, ensure it’s suitable for deep water fishing
What about sea conditions?
Trips are weather and sea-dependent. Safety comes first, and we may cancel or reschedule if conditions are unsafe. We’ll keep in touch with you before your trip.
Will we see wildlife?
Very likely! The area is known for seals, dolphins, seabirds, and sometimes penguins or whales. We follow DOC’s SMART Operator guidelines to ensure respectful and safe marine wildlife encounters.
How many people can you take?
Our vessel can take up to 10 passengers, with a maximum combined weight limit (people and gear) of 1000 kg to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety.
Are children welcome?
Yes, families and children are welcome, but please let us know their ages so we can ensure appropriate lifejackets and safety equipment are available.
Do you offer private or custom charters?
Yes, we are happy to tailor a trip to suit your needs. Options include hunting drop-offs and pick-ups, stag parties, hen dos, family trips, special occasions, photography, wildlife or sightseeing cruises. Contact us to design the perfect adventure for your group.
